Historically, a variety of names, including DATA MINING, KNOLEDGE EXTRACTION, or INFORMATION DISCOVERY, has been used to refer to the field of KNOWLEDGE DISCOVERY in DATABASE (KDD), it means: “the non-trivial process of identifying valid, novel, potentially useful, and ultimately understandable patterns in data”, as introduced at the first KDD workshop in 1989.

Over the last two decades, companies have strongly invested in technical and applicative infrastructures and database management systems to store digital data. It has been said that a "sleeping mass" of knowledge is contained in most data management systems. However, they have not developed their capability to make use of the knowledge contained in that data. Raw data need to be organized, analysed and interpreted by A.I. technologies in order to turn in useful information and improve management process.
